writer's block - i'm thinking what i may have as i'm at the moment devoid of any inspiration, maybe 'half term lethargy' or something like that, i've lots to be getting on with, a list of things and plans i want to make and do, but i've been spending a lot of time sat here, just sat surfing - the children are quite happy to play outside enjoying each others company, which is great, but i - startlingly numb! a gloomy period of total inactivity! sorry to be so negative but i'm thinking if i write it down and let you know - it may go! But then actions speak louder than words - sometimes...

a little handmade goodness for valentines, here is the pattern:

last minute makes for children to make...#4

peppermint creams - these are easy peasy and taste really cool and made extra special and extra fun to make with the drizzled chocolate...

makes about 20 using a 5cm/ 2inch round cutter. also you will need to make them a day before you want to give/ eat them!

1 large egg white
450g/ 1lb icing/ confectioner's sugar
few drops peppermint oil

for the drizzled chocolate topping:
100g/ 4oz of your favourite chocolate, i used dark
few drops of peppermint oil

beat the egg white with a fork until frothy.
add the icing sugar a spoonful at a time until a soft and not sticky anymore, dough is formed (you may not need all the icing sugar).
work in a few drops of the peppermint oil with your (clean) hands to taste.
dust a work surface with icing sugar and roll out (dust the rolling pin with sugar too) to 6mm/ 1/4inch thick,.
cut into rounds and lay onto a baking sheet lined with baking parchment dusted with icing sugar.
melt the chocolate until very runny - either in a microwave or in a bowl set over barely simmering water - adult - may need your help for this hot water bit!. Then when it is all melty and runny, stir in a couple of drops of peppermint oil.
with a teaspoon allow the chocolate to dribble and scribble all over the creams... i then sprinkled a little edible glitter over as extra wintery sparkle effect.
leave then to dry out over night - the creams will go hard but still have the soft smooth minty creaminess as you bite into them.
pack into bags with a hand written tag.

my small son made these 3 kings cards for his teachers' cards - just simple folded paper dollies:

take a piece of paper (8.5" x 11") and cut it lengthwise.
fold it into quarters accordian (pleated) style.
draw a figure of a person on the top layer. be sure that the arms extend beyond the edge of the folded sheet.
cut the figure out and unfold. you will get a chain of dolls/ kings holding hands.

knitted pink sugar mice
i know i've posted this one before but it's such and easy project for young knitters to attempt that i thought you may like to see it again although this pattern is knitted as flat knitting, not in the round as before - a bit easier for smaller hands...

ive used the instruction kfb throughout this pattern which means knit into the front and then onto the back of a stitch to increase - there is a good u-tube video here to show you how to do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILcTB5hc0XM

using size 3 1/2mm or 4mm needles and a 4 ply, sock or fine dk yarn, cast on 2sts.

Row 1 knit into the front and then the back of the first stitch to increase (called kfb), do the same kfb increase to the other stitch. 4sts

Row 2 kfb, k2, kfb. 6sts Row 3 P6. Row 4 [Kfb, k1] 3 times. 9sts Row 5 P9. Row 6 [Kfb, k2] 3 times. 12sts Row 7 P12. Row 8 [Kfb, k5] 3 times. 15sts Row 9 P15.
keep knitting in stocking stitch (knit a row, purl a row) until the mouse measures (approx.) 7cm/ 2 3/4in from the tip of its nose. Bind off all stitches. tail

finger knitting with 3 strands or a knitting dolly tail with 4 strands works well for the mouse's tail, or simply just braid 3 strands of yarn. sew the tail on.

sew the seam from the tip of the nose to the bind off edge.

Cut a tiny 6mm/ 1/2in diameter (approx.) circle from the felt. Cut the circle in half for each ear. Oversew these to the top of the head. Work stitches over the tip of the nose in black thread. Sew on the beady eyes (or embroider them on with little knots if you wish).

we have a week to go so why not fill your time... because of course you have lots of it!!! - er, yes, ok, start again - for children to read only - you have a week to go so why not fill your time with a few simple makes (secret pressies for your family perhaps?!) - first up, simplest dolly peg dollies, my daughter made these for her friends... take a dolly peg and with a fine tipped pen draw on a characterful face, one with attitude... next cut a 15cm/ 6inch x 2.5cm/ 1inch wide strip of ribbon (or any strip of cloth or even a strip of pretty paper) and the same length of sewing thread or fine yarn. Wind the ribbon around the 'body' of the doll - May found that putting glue from a glue stick onto the body first helped the ribbon to stay in place. wind the thread around the ribbon starting in the middle of the thread, winding both ends around the ribbon dress then tying the ends of the thread together in a knot. Cut lengths of yarn for the hair. rub a blob of glue onto the top of the peg then lay the yarn over the glue and leave to dry. May tied the hair or braided it to suit.

we may have been momentarily thrust back into high summer over here but the leaves are still falling thick and fast like snowflakes - be inspired perhaps and go forth toward your stash and knit these this weekend - your thinking perhaps an individual one as a brooch or adornment, however you'll get un-stop-ably addicted 'cos they are quick and fun and made all in one... and after your frenzy you'll end up with a positively autumnal splendid garland of many oak leaves to be proud of... i'm off to make more and finish my squirreling t cozy which i'll show you next week! have a great, fun weekend!

oak leaves pattern

Using 31⁄2mm (US size 4) needles and any spare 4-ply, sock or sport yarn cast on 6 sts onto one needle, using simple sock toe cast on cont as follows:
1. Hold needle with cast on stitches in left hand.
2. Hold 2 empty dpns parallel in right hand.
3. Slip 1st cast on st p-wise onto the dpn closest to you and off the needle in the right hand, then slip the next cast on st onto the dpn furthest away and off the RH needle.
Repeat step 3 until all 6 stitches are divided onto the 2 parallel dpns, 3 sts on the front dpn and 3 sts on the back. Slide sts to the other ends of the dpns, working yarn at back.
RS facing, cont working in the rnd, beginning by knitting the sts on the back dpn - working stitches over two dpns, using a 3rd dpn to knit with, as follows:
Rnd 1 K6.
Rnd 2 (inc) Kfb, k1, kfb, kfb, k1, kfb. 10sts (therefore 5sts on each dpn)
Rnd 3 K10.
Rnd 4 (inc) Kfb, k3, kfb, kfb, k3, kfb. 14sts
Rnd 5 (inc) Kfb, k5, kfb, kfb, k5, kfb. 18sts
Rnd 6 K18.

Leaving a longish tail end, cut yarn, thread up a yarn sewing needle.
Graft 2 sts on front dpn with 2 sts from back dpn working kitchener st:
1. Insert the threaded needle purl-wise into the first stitch on the dpn closest to you, pull the yarn through, leave the st on the needle.
2. Insert the threaded needle into the first stitch on the back dpn, as if to knit, pull yarn through, leave that stitch on the dpn.
3. Insert the threaded needle into the same front stitch, this time knit-wise, then slip that stitch off the dpn then bring threaded needle through the next front stitch as if to purl it – leave this stitch on the dpn.
4. Pass the threaded needle through the same stitch on back dpn – this time purl-wise, slip that stitch off the dpn*, then bring threaded needle through the next back stitch as if to knit it – leave this stitch on the needle.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 once more to *. Weave in the end.
Thread leaves onto a length of yarn if you would like to make the garland.

Signs of Autumn #3

this is a sorry little tale... last friday we rescued two baby pigeons (we think they must have fallen from the nest, also the mother was nowhere in site), we took them home to look after them and all was well, although one was considerably smaller than the other, until yesterday when the smaller one died we think he/she couldn't digest the food properly - perhaps an internal injury after falling from the nest? we buried the dear little creature and i must admit the whole household was rather sad that sunday, it's quite curious how you get so attached to something like this - & a reminder how fragile life is... however the other chap is very much alive, growing well, starting to stretch his/her wings and preen and peck and is also learning to hop onto low things so we hope that there will be a happy tale to tell there - i'll keep you informed... i'd love any advise if you have any?

man it's windy today! with a bounty of quince windfalls as a consequence- i'm thinking quince brandy this year as the quince jelly of last year, after all it's tediously disagreeable process off drip drip jelly bag and all that straining, turned out to be a little bit of a disappointment - by that i mean inedible and rather too stickily set, stuck fast in the jar actually! - it looked prettily glowing and gleaming on the window sill though, if i remember rightly, in fact i'll get it out from the back of the cupboard and place it back onto the window sill to make me feel virtuous again - (who'll know?)... a good weekend though, especially saturday's post - i received my order from faded plains, a vintage glass lamp base, so, so beautifully packaged, which i have to share with you, and two fat quarters from m is for make which i was equally overjoyed with, again packaged so specially i felt they were special presents just for me 'ah!'- thanks guys, made my day x !

last saturday, whilst visiting my parents in the cotswolds, we took a trip to the black country museum, so fascinating to go temporarily 'back in time' to the beginnings of the industrial revolution, wonderful history - but what impressed me most was the simply stylish, yet thrifty, interiors of the old, workers' cottages. i took reference shots with the plan to perhaps emulate this simple style in my own home...

i've recently had a go at needle felting to make a small gift for my daughter's best friend - it cost very little to buy what i needed - the rather scary needle, a pad and the 'wool roving', i had to give it a go because i was so inspired by this artist's truly wonderful canine creations - my technique needs a heck of a lot more practice buy she's still rather cute don't you think? may, my daughter made her bed.

for me one of the best things about summer is strawberry jam making, and especially strawberry jam because of that tantelisingly sweet sugary strawberry smell your kitchen acquires as it boils along and that glorious jewel like ruby red that fills your jars, i put my filled jars on the window sill so they glow even more - tastes pretty nice too! i read somewhere once to warm the jam sugar in the oven first - helps for a quicker setting time - really works!

Last minute Easter make - 'egg nest' & 'egg vase'

i love delicately coloured hedgerow and tiny rockery flowers which are so abundant at this time of year, and thanks to the warm weather we have been having i adore the scent of them, in particular the hedgerow ones because they remind me so of my childhood bike rides up and down country lanes, as it lingers on the air. to display a tiny posy of them for a little easter display wash out an egg shell - one after having a soft boiled egg is good because only the very top has been taken off, paint the egg with white emulsion, gouache, poster or acrylic paint, leave dry them decorate - children love to do this - with simple leaves and flowers.
If you just wanted to display them as a vase, place a few stones in the bottom to weight them and to stop them toppling over then add water and flowers. for the knitted egg nest in which to hang your teeny posy here is the simple pattern:

Yarn shown – King Cole Bamboo Cotton

Cast on 3 sts using any 4-ply (fingering) or sportweight yarn and size 2.5mm (US size 0) needles.

1st rnd K3.

Work as i-cord; slide sts to other end of needle without turning, keeping gauge tight, pull working yarn across the back of the i-cord.

Rnd 2 (inc) [Kfb] 3 times. 6sts

Rnd 3 K6 - knitting each set of 2 sts over 3 needles. RS facing, join in rnd.

Rnd 4 (inc) [Kfb] 6 times. 12sts

Rnd 5 K12.

Rnd 6 (inc) [K1, Kfb] 6 times. 18sts

Hanging ties

With 1^st set of 2 sts at the ‘corner’ of the nest work i-cord until cord measures approx. 15cm/6in. Cast off 2sts. Weave in end.

Rejoin yarn to another pair sts at another ‘corner’ and work i-cord to match length of other tie.

Repeat process with rem 2 sts so that you have 3 ties.

Either knot the ties at the end to link them tog, or pass a knitted stitch from each tie over an existing cup hook.

and what a weekend again for doing such, and nothing much else besides. my daughter may (pictured) and i made the paper pots using the amazing paper potter - such fun, they look especially nice and pretty made from the boden newpaper don't you think? i'll keep you posted as my seeds grow.

i simply love breakfast - a good weekend or holiday breakfast - not a school morning down a quick bowl of instant porridge affair, oh no - rather a perfectly relaxed, preferably outdoors on a warm spring morning (am i asking too much? as you can see the photo below was taken indoors so perhaps i am asking too much), one with eggs - a boiled one or scrambled set atop a buttered bagel, bacon, toast, apricot jam and a hot pot of good tea.
to celebrate breakfast i've a simple free pattern here or here for an easter egg cozy to pretty up the easter breakfast table...

random knitting - i love knitting like this, as much as i love knitting within pattern constraints, i did it here and here - for me it's a great release of creative mayhem, working on small size needles with chunky yarn, adding an aran yarn to a 4-ply or lace weight, bringing in a colour here another colour there and stuffing the object as i go with the loose ends of yarn and really getting to know yarn and what it can do - there is no pattern for these but i urge you to try - just start with a few stitches, increase decrease, no holds barred... it's such fun!

Yarn:

Tea cozy – 1 or 2 x 50g balls chunky (bulky) yarn (60 metres/ 66 yards)

- I used Debbie Bliss Donegal luxury tweed Chunky shade 9307

Cup-cake – DK (light-worsted weight) yarn - 2 different colours in small amounts for cake (C), icing (I) and a small amount 4-ply for the cherry (Ch) and the hearts (H)

- I used Rowan Pure wool DK shade o14 Hay (C), Rowan Soft Baby shade 033 Sea Pink (I) and a tiny amount of Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift (4-ply) shade 525 Crimson (Ch) and shade 188 Sherbet (H)

Needles:

Tea cozy - set size 5mm (US 8) double pointed needles

Cup-cake – set size 3mm (US 2) double pointed needles

Gauge:

Tea cozy – 21 rows and 14 sts to 4in (10cm), using MC and size 8 (5mm) needles and rib pattern

Cup-cake – not necessary

Using tea cozy yarn cast on 64 sts. Follow pattern from Nesting Tea Cozy Pattern.

Base

Cherry

Cast on 6 sts using cherry yarn and size 3mm (US 2) needles.

Row 1 [Kfb] 6 times. 12 sts

WS facing, slip 12 sts p-wise and divide equally over 3 needles.

With RS facing, keeping gauge fairly tight on first rnd, work in the rnd as follows:

gosh - not a great start to my blogging year - here is my make of the month for january! well i started it yesterday, does that count? so - inspired by the sudden trill of birdsong which must mean spring is on its way - here is my nesting tea cozy pattern - i've never knitted a tea cozy before and i've suddenly realized how much i love them, i'm going to do another one, i have to, what better thing to make - something cozy and warm for something that keeps you feeling cozy and warm - a nice cuppa!

Nesting-time tea cozy pattern

Yarn:

Tea cozy – 2 x 50g ball chunky (bulky) yarn (60 metres/ 66 yards)

- I used Debbie Bliss Como shade 03 Silver

Bird – 4-ply (fingering weight) yarn - 3 different colours in small amounts for beak (B), head (H) and main body (MB)

- I used Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift shade 470 Pumpkin (MB) with shade 1160 Scotch Broom (H) and a tiny amount of grey black 4-ply

from my stash for the beak

Nest - small amount chunky (bulky) wool yarn

- I used Berroco Peruvia Quick shade 9119 Mostaza and 9114 Chipotle plus a lovely green from my stash

Needles:

Tea cozy - set size 5mm (US 8) double pointed needles

Bird – set size 2mm (US 2) double pointed needles

Notions:

Tiny beads or toy eyes for bird’s eyes

Gauge:

Tea cozy – 22 rows and 14 sts to 4in (10cm), using MC and size 5mm (US 8) needles and rib pattern

Bird – tension for this project is not necessary as there is no limit to its size

Tea cozy pattern

Using yarn MC cast on 64 sts.

Slip 64sts p-wise and divide over three needles as follow: N1-21sts, n2-22sts, n3-21sts

With RS facing, keeping gauge fairly tight on first rnd, work in the rnd as follows:

Rnd 1 K64.

Rnd 2 [K3, p1] 16 times.

Rep last rnd 6 times more.

Divide for spout and handle

Rnd 9 (dec) Bind off 1 st, k1, p1, [k3, p1] five times, k3, bind off 10 sts in k3/p1 rib, k1, p1, [k3, p1] 6 times. 53 sts. Turn.

Work one side

Row 10 (WS) (dec) Bind off 1 st, p2, k1, [p3, k1] 5 times, p2. 26 sts.

Leave the other 26 sts on the needles.

Row 11 (RS) K2, [p1, K3] 6 times.

Row 12 (WS) [P3, k1] 6 times, p2.

Rep last 2 rows 4 times more. Cut yarn.

Work other side

WS facing, rejoin yarn to 26 sts from the other side, [p3, k1] 6 times, p2.

Row 10 (RS) K2, [p1, K3] 6 times.

Row 11 (WS) [P3, k1] 6 times, p2.

Join both sides

Row 21 (inc) K2, [p1, K3] 6 times, cast on 6 sts using Backward Loop method (instructions, if you need them, are at the end of the pattern), from other side of the cozy continue as follows: k2, [p1, k3] 6 times, backward loop cast on 2 sts, place marker, join in the rnd, cont as follows: 60 sts

Rnd 22 K2, [p1, k3] 14 times, p1, k1. Pull sts tightly as you knit across the junctions to avoid gaps.

Rep last rnd six times more.

Shape top

Rnd 29 (dec) K2tog, [p1, k1, k2tog] 14 times, p1, k1. 45 sts

Rnd 30 K1, [p1, k2] 14 times, p1, k1.

Cut yarn, thread end through all 15 sts, pull up tight to close up the hole and secure the end.

Backward Loop Cast On - Hold the working yarn in your left hand with the needle in your right. Extend your left index finger parallel to the yarn, dip your finger under the yarn and towards you. Move the tip of the needle from the base of your finger so that the needle is through the loop with your finger. Remove your finger then tighten the loop on the needle.

Bird

Using yarn B, cast on 1st.

Row 1 Knit into front and back of slip knot. 2 sts

Row 2 [Purl into front then knit into back of st] twice. (4 sts)

Row 3 Kfb, k2, kfb. 6 sts

Row 4 P.

Change to yarn H.

Row 5 Kfb, k2, kfb. 8 sts.

Sew on the beads, or snap on the toy eyes, and sew up the beak and beginning of the head.

Nest

Cut a single length of yarn to tie around the middle of the simple pompom and place it next to you - you will need this in a moment. Wind the yarn for the nest around your fingers, all four fingers at once. Wind about 10 times if you are using three strands of yarn at once as I did. When you have wound enough yarn, take the single length and slip it between your middle and ring finger and tie it around the bundle. Pull it tight to prevent the bundle from falling apart (for a great way to make tiny pompoms go to this link!) Cut the yarn along the sides – watch your fingers!

Sew the raggy pompom onto the top of the tea cozy, then sew the bird on the top of the nest.

knitting with carrots

ah, see even my salt and pepper bunnies - named salt & pepper... - are perhaps not so foolishly fooled by the seemingly carroty hue coloured yarn from my latest knitted project for my next book - carrots, taste; smell and colour were in my head with every stitch i knitted (perhaps i should knit a carrot?) - i'm now onto to a pinkish yarn called sherbet (both from jamiesons of shetland) now which reminds me of raspberry sorbet - sweet thoughts while i knit i think!

Easy last-minute-makes Christmas tree…

From felt or fabric cut circles as follows: (I simply drew the circles using varying sizes of cotton reels and coins)

1 x 4cm/ 1½in diameter

1 x 2½cm/ 1in diameter

1 x 2cm/ ¾in diameter

1 x 1½cm/ ½in diameter

Radiating around each circle make cuts about 6mm/ 1/4in apart and in length for the larger circle diminishing the distance and the length as the circles get smaller.

Secure a length of sewing thread into a button – the base of the tree. Before you carry on it’s important to make sure the thread is bang in the centre of the button. Sew the thread through the centre of the largest felt/ fabric circle. Next attach a bead and then sew through the centre of the next sized circle. Then another bead and another circle until you end with the smallest circle. Cut a star from felt and pass the needle and thread through the centre. Tie a knot above the star to stop it from sliding up the thread then knot the thread to form a hanging loop. Decorate the tree if or as you wish!

They’d make quite cute earrings actually!

Rep last rnd 14 times more.

Shape back

Rnd 28 [K2 tog] 10 times, k1. (11 sts)

Rnd 29 K11.

Stuff your donkey with toy filling or spare yarn.

Tail

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail end of approx. 51cm/ 20in, thread end through yarn needle, thread needle through first 3 sts, leave next 5 sts onto a dpn, cont to thread rem 3 sts onto the yarn needle. Pull up tight to close hole, use the thread to work the tail as i cord until the yarn runs almost to the end, thread end through the rem sts, pull up and secure the end.

Legs

Fore legs make 2 alike. Cast on 5 sts, *work an i cord until the cord measures 2½cm/ 1in. Cut yarn, thread end through yarn needle, thread needle through 6 sts, pull up tight to close hole. Secure end. Weave in the end at the hoof end.**

Back legs make 2 alike. Cast on 6 sts, work as Fore Legs from * to **.

Sew legs to the sides of the body.

Ears make 2 alike

Cast on 5 sts, work as i cord as follows;

K5.

Rep last rnd twice.

K2 tog, k1, k2 tog.

K3.

Rep last rnd once.

Cut yarn, thread end through yarn needle, thread needle through 3 sts, pull up and secure end.

Sew onto the side of the head at the cast on end of ear.

Sew on eyes, a mane with sewing thread – on the white donkey I also sewed a band around the muzzle, in cotton thread to give shape to the muzzle.
